GLOSS ENHANCEMENT
REDEFINE THE SHINE
OVERVIEW
The GLOSS ENHANCEMENT is the middle tier of our signature PRESERVATION service. This service is ideal for vehicles with a dull, hazy finish, or light to moderate scratches and swirls. Bring back the shine with 50% to 60% defect correction and boost gloss and protection with specialized ceramic coatings for nearly every surface. Aside from new vehicles, most will fall under this category, as it’s rare for a vehicle to not require any paint correction. DUE TO THE SENSITIVE NATURE OF PAINT CORRECTION AND CERAMIC COATINGS, A SUITABLE WORKING ENVIRONMENT IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE. IF AVAILABLE TO WORK IN, A GARAGE OR SHOP AT THE CUSTOMER’S LOCATION IS IDEAL. If an indoor space is not available, we have to rely on suitable weather to perform the service, which may require extended wait times or rescheduling, especially during the Winter. Rain, snow, excessive cold, heat, or wind are all unsuitable conditions for this service. If the weather conditions are right, with no rain or extreme temperatures on the forecast for at least 1 full day afterwards, we can perform the service outside. We’ll set up a 12x12 canopy to work under to block the sun and maintain ideal paint temperatures. This service typically takes one full day to complete. Times can range anywhere from 8 to 12 hours.
Prices start at $1,700 and increase based on size of the vehicle.
INSPECTION
Our paint correction is focused on safety and preservation. Instead of blindly putting a polisher on the paint until it looks good, we take steps to ensure a quality correction is achieved without compromising the integrity of the surfaces. If possible, we’ll perform the inspection with the customer on site to discuss the service, address any specific issues, and determine if a 1 or 2 step correction is the better option based on the condition of the paint.
PAINT DEPTH GAUGE
As with every service, a preliminary inspection is performed to give us an idea of what we’re working with. To start, we use a paint depth gauge on several areas around the car to to measure how thick the paint is. Most paint jobs have an average thickness of around 4 - 7 mils. If the paint is at or below 3 mils, polishing may not be possible due to the excessive risk of burn through.
PAINT LIGHT
Once we’ve established a sufficient paint thickness, we’ll thoroughly inspect the condition of the paint with a dedicated color specific paint inspection light. With sufficient lighting, scratches and swirls are much easier to see. We’ll notify you of any defects that appear to be too severe to be fully removed. Remember, a 1 step correction removes light to moderate swirls and restores the finish, whereas the 2 step correction has the ability to attack deeper scratches with a heavier cut compound and wool pad.
TEST SPOT
The test spot is critical in selecting which polishing pad and liquid works best for the result we’re looking for. Paint greatly varies from car to car, so a pad and liquid combo that worked great on one vehicle might not work on the next. Some cars have much harder paint and may require a wool pad instead of foam, or compound instead of polish to sufficiently remove defects. We’ll start at an intermediate pad and liquid combo and determine whether we need to move up or down in strength. If the paint is too hard and a stronger pad/liquid combo is needed, a 2 step correction may be necessary to fully refine the finish after heavy defect removal.
PAINT CORRECTION
Once the inspection and test spot are complete, we can begin polishing the rest of the vehicle. This is a slow and repetitive process that can take hours. We’ll stick with the same pad and liquid combo that we determined during the test spot and work the entire vehicle, one panel at a time.
EDGE WORK
With a small, 1 inch faced polisher, we’ll focus on polishing all the areas that our full size polisher will not fit. Peaks, valleys, edges, and hard to reach areas are all addressed. Our 1 inch polisher, unlike the full size random orbital machine, has the ability to polish in a rotary action, allowing us to polish very precisely right up to tight edges.
FULL PANELS
Once the edge work is complete, we move on to polishing the remainder of the vehicle with our full size random orbital machine. The process involves polishing a 2X2 section at a time, wiping off the residue, inspecting the work, reapplying as needed, and regularly blowing off residue from the polishing pad.
CERAMIC COATING
After the paint correction is complete, a 50/50 isopropyl alcohol and water mixture is used for a final wipe down to remove any remaining polishing oils and residue. Ceramic coatings are applied to the paint, wheels, chrome, glass, and trim. For details on the entire ceramic coating process, please CLICK HERE.
